News: Taiwan to Replace All Mercury Street Lamps with LEDs by 2016

Taiwan government announced plan to replace all mercury street lights with more energy-saving LED applications by 2016, the WantChina Times has reported.  According to Cabinet spokesperson Sun Lih-Chyun, a budget of NT$5.5 billion (US$179 million) will be allocated for the two-year conversion project, which aims to unplug 692,000 mercury street lamps around Taiwan. The measure will also be backed up by regulations enforcing a ban on mercury-vapor street lamps.
